Pusey Trail and Cemeteries

A week or so ago we found a brochure called “Just Walk”. It was put out by the Worcester County Health Dept. You could sign up and receive gifts for the miles you walked on 15 different trails. Most of which we had already hiked. There were a couple we hadn’t so we decided to go ahead and do it. The first one we picked was the Pusey Branch Trail on Old Furnace Rd near Old Beech Rd.

There is a cemetery at the front of this trail, so we thought we would check it out.

Lost part of his tail and has a hole in his side.

We then see this headstone. I knew by the writing and style that it is a military grave. When I got home, I decided to do a little research on S.C. Stevens. Private Stanley C. Stevens enlisted into the Union Army (Civil War) on August 30, 1864 at 28 years old. He was in Battery E of the 6th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. He was enlisted for 1 year and mustered out June 13, 1865. I could not find his birth or death dates.

We finish looking around and head to the trail.

The trail needs some maintenance but it is well marked.

We came to a secondary trail and headed that way.

The White Trail took us to a swamp, bright green life in an otherwise old, dying forest.

A few boardwalks and busted up benches along the way.

We found another path off of the designated path and tried to take that one but there was too much water.

I don’t think so! A mound of rotted wood.

Our path. A short hike and I couldn’t wait to get back and fill out the Health Department form to start earning free gifts!! Ha!! Get to the bottom of the form and it informs me that we have to be Worcester residents to register!!

As I mentioned above, I did some research on Pvt. Stevens. Because this hike was on the Pusey Branch and there were Pusey headstones in the cemetery, I just assumed the name of the cemetery was Pusey? (Researchers NEVER assume!). I went to the Find a Grave website and saw that the Pusey Cemetery is a couple miles west on Meadow Bridge Rd. The above cemetery is called the Nazareth Cemetery, from a church and not a private one.

So, a week later we head to find the Pusey Cemetery. As we head down the road Kathy sees some headstones in the woods. This one is a private cemetery called Bounds-McAllen Cemetery.

A small cemetery and not the one we are looking for. A photo on the Find a Grave site shows it with a fence. We head further up the road and we see a gate on a trail and we think this must be the place. Walking back about 700′ we found it. Seemed odd that there was a marker on the outside of the fence.

We found another Veteran’s grave. There is more available research on him, on Google, than that on Stevens. As can be seen, he was in the Confederate Army, the cavalry. Here is a link for info. http://www.mikehitch.com/me/5062.htm Thanks Mike for the info.

After visiting here, we hiked some. Another story, another time.

It would be nice to know the story of the two service men. They are buried a couple miles from each other, in cemeteries with family members of the same name. Did they know each other. One item I read about Azariah was that he enlisted in the union, was captured by the rebels and joined them?? So many questions, so little time…

(Un)Haunted Road Trip

During winter lock-down, I have been able to catch up on a lot of reading. I have always enjoyed local history books. Read quite a few of Baltimore’s History while living up there, so now I read a lot of Eastern Shore History. Right now I am reading The Rivers of the Eastern Shore while also reading The Lord’s Oysters. I mention places to Kathy that are in the books and she says, well, let’s go check them out. For this outing I referred to Haunted Eastern Shore.

First stop on the list was the White Marsh Cemetery, also known as the Hole in the Wall Cemetery. I guess a doorway could also be called a hole?

This cemetery is quite visible from Rte. 50 heading west from Trappe. Right hand side. Here is the historical marker.

A couple notable haunted stories about this place are that the wife, Hanna, of the Reverend Maynadier of this church took ill and died. People knew she wanted to be buried with her favorite (expensive) ring and she was. The night after her burial two grave robbers dug her up and tried to pull the ring off her finger with no luck. The one robber pulled out his pocket knife and as he was trying to cut her finger off, she awoke from a coma and screamed – scaring them off. She made it home where she recovered. Supposedly you can see her roaming around the cemetery. We did not. It may have been too windy. She is buried with her husband.

Another story is that of Robert Morris whose fate is described in the last paragraph of his burial stone/marker: A salute from the cannon of a ship, the wad fracturing his arm, was the means by which he departed July 12, 1750. Someone on the ship was to fire the cannon at the Captains signal – finger to nose. But a fly landed on his nose and when he shooed it off with his finger…well, you get the picture!

Next stop on our trip was Koon’s Easton Toyota about 3 miles north on Rte. 50. The Peach Blossom Creek Covered Bridge is another one of those places you see heading to and fro on Rte. 50. We tried once before to seek out a route to this bridge but ended up on private property and stopped.

I decided to go into the dealership and ask permission to park in their lot and try to find a way through the marsh/woods. They said we could park there but didn’t think it was possible to get thru the marsh. One of the guys suggested walking up to the St. Michaels bypass and look for a path. That was a little too far to go so we headed behind the store and was stopped by the marsh, headed north to an opening and headed through the woods to a clearing and to the bridge.

Finally to the bridge. Looking back at Koon’s and no, we would not have made it through the marsh.

We didn’t see this going in, but this is where we came out next to Rte. 50.

Next stop on our trip was to the Tunis Mills Hanging Tree on Miles River Rd. This is near an area called “The Rest”. Wonder how long this sign will stay up?

This is what the tree is supposed to look like. Lots of people were hung here. Not sure whom, but a lot. You are supposed to sit in your car under the tree, motor off and listen for the faint screams of those hung! I couldn’t wait!!

Well, this is what the tree looks like now! And over on the side of the road is the hanging limb.

Leave there, disappointed I must add, and head back over the Miles River draw bridge. Pull off the road onto a dirt road.

And of course I had to climb under the bridge.

Decided then to head to Tilghman Island and St. Michaels. Checked out the Lowes Wharf. Tide is out.

Looks like they are installing a new bulkhead or something.

Follow the road through St. Michaels to where you cannot go any further. I was hoping we could but the road is closed at the entrance to Black Walnut Point.

There is a naval lab here also.

By this time of the day it was getting rather windy and chilly. Only a couple more stops (We gave up on the ghost hunting). This is an interesting sign. I thought Deal Island was home for the skipjacks.

Finally heading home and a quick stop at the TI Drawbridge. Constructed in 1934, it is Maryland’s only overhead counterweight bascule span and one of only fifteen moveable bridges throughout the state road network. This type of bridge a heel trunion rolling lift bridge with a counterweight suspended above the roadway was constructed at the Knapps Narrows site because of its ease and speed of operation. The bridge opened approximately 12,000 times a year, more often than most East Coast bridges.

Another wonderful road trip with so much seen and appreciated!! Always an adventure with Kathy. No ghost but lots of sights.

If the truth be told, I do miss doing historical research. So, when something of interest comes along, I will see what I can find out. Don’t get me wrong, I love being retired and enjoy doing the things that Kathy and I do. I really don’t have much time for writing and research. So when I can combine research and field trips, well, that makes retirement so much better!

The other day someone passed along to me a booklet: Whence Did The Negro Originate. by NJ Tilghman. My first reaction was – Are you kidding me??

Rear Cover

There are a lot of Tilghman’s down here on the Eastern Shore, but this one says he is from Palatka Florida. Time to do some research on this very odd booklet. Here is the full title page:

Interesting about the above is that the Publisher has been cut off the page (and erased off the rear cover). Without going into a lot of detail about the book I will say this – This guy was crazy! The Readers Digest version: Adam and Eve had Cain and Abel. Cain kills Abel and is cast out into the wilderness where he takes up a wife…Wait!! Adam and Eve had no daughters?? So who became Cain’s wife?? Well according to the Reverend and his “reliable information” Cain married an Orangoutang (his spelling) or Gorilla. He goes on to prove his point which makes absolutely no sense.

Then the question of “What about the Great Flood”? You know, where Noah takes a few million species of animals in a boat? Notes: The N in NJ Tilgman stands for Noah. Also, Tilghman had a son who it appears built a boat that was called Noah’s Ark. So, the booklet goes on to say that “…But Negroes, offspring of Cain and the ape, were not pure men, but unclean and must be preserved in the Ark with the unclean beasts.”

After some more research I found out that Tilghman was originally from the Eastern Shore and is buried at a cemetery in Snow Hill. Kathy suggested a road trip to find it. Looking at the Findagrave website we found it. So off we went.

We placed his little booklet on his headstone. I wonder if after meeting God he “rolled in his grave” as they say??

Here is his Death Certificate. I had to contact the person who posted the grave info to ask about the cause of death. I could not make it out. She said it was “Exhaustion due to Prostatitis, Contributory – Enlarged Prostrate.

Why do obituaries always say nice things about people? His actually glorifies him, 8 years after he wrote this pamphlet. Here are some excerpts: Rev. Noah J. Tilghman (1828-1918), one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens of Palatka…He was an earnest student of the Bible, and put into daily practice its great lessons of mortality and spirituality. He lived the life of practical Christianity, treating all men honestly and honorably, and so closely following “the golden rule” in his every act and endeavor as to make his example one worthy of emulation. Unbelievable!

A little further research found this information about this spiritual giant!

Date: January 16, 1901 Creator: Jennings, William Sherman, 1863-1920 Warrants Florida Boom and Progressive Era (1890-1926) General Note: On December 21, 1901, Governor William S. Jennings signed a death warrant listing Noah J. Tilghman as the man to be hanged. Tilghman’s name had been mistakenly written on the warrant. The death warrant was supposed to be issued for J. B. Brown, an African-American man wrongfully convicted of murdering white railroad engineer Harry E. Wesson. After the debacle with the death warrant, Brown was sentenced to life in prison. In 1913, Brown was exonerated. Tilghman wrote the Governor a few times about this.

After this we decided to roam around Snow Hill. There was some sort of Oyster Festival going on. We went into the Antique Toy store which was fun. Then to a really nice art studio with a wonderful artist named Nancy.

Grabbed some lunch at the Down Under carry-out, headed back to Byrd Park, ate and looked for the Goats of Goat Island.

Blackwater Refuge to Hoopers Island

This was a really nice road trip. A little over-cast but nice. The first time we visited BWR a couple years ago, we followed the not too smart, smart phone that directed us to the middle of a swamp and then to Crappo. Another time we traveled to Cambridge and then south to the Refuge. This time we decided to take the scenic back roads. I saw on a map that there were a couple kayak put-in spots so we thought we’d check them out.

We took Rte 50 to Vienna and headed south on Rte 192. On the map was Bestpitch Ferry Rd., showing a launch. What wasn’t on the map was this sign:

When you see a “Bridge Closed” sign, you should heed it! Na! We thought this was the bridge they were talking about. It wasn’t.

The road started to get a little hairy and we could see where it had been washed out in places. Then we came upon this.

On the other side of the barrier a wood, one lane bridge. Looks alright to me.

The kayak launch site is across the river, to the left. In the photo below it looks like a launch that has flooded out over the years.

Time to turn around. Bridge blocked, road falling apart and now a fire.

We make it thru the danger and head back to Decoursey Bridge Rd to Bucktown. On the way we came across this little, unafraid of the truck fellow.

Glad we had the detour. Some nice places to visit.

Harriet Tubman Underground Rail Road.

The Brodess Farm is where it was said HT was born. Other accounts say her mother and herself were brought (bought) here after she was born.

There is no trace of the original farm house, although this one is there. Private property, keep out.

Heading down Greenbriar Rd to Maple Dam Rd, we came across this house. It was unmarked but looking at a couple history pamphlets, we found that this was the Nause-Waiwash Longhouse. It was an abandoned church before the Indians took it over. It looks a lot nicer in the brochure.

Moving along towards the refuge, we spot our first of many eagles. (We lost count at 9-10).

We leave the visitor center and head to the main entrance of the Wildlife Drive. Stopping to eat lunch at the observation deck. On the left of the road there is the Marsh Edge Trail and that was closed due to nesting eagles.

Leaving the refuge it was time to head to Hoopers Island. Rte 335. Heading down Hoopers Island road we came across this church. Originally the “Tubman Chapel”, it moved across the street. St. Mary Star of the Sea.

First bridge onto the islands is at Tyler Cove, Fishing Creek.

Behind here is a cemetery, which brings me to WHY we wanted to visit Hoopers Island. We want to see all this before it is completely submerged. There is a great video on the sinking of this island. You should watch it – High Tide in Dorchester – https://www.bayjournal.com/films

Lots of fishing and sea life down here. Hard to believe it was mostly farms at one tome.

We headed south to the middle island. There are 3 islands, probably more at one time.

Looks like 3 adults and one juvenile. Even with a 300mm lens, they were too far off.

Toadvine Cemetery

Lots of “First time doing this” since moving to Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Merrill asked me to help him cut the grass in a small cemetery in the middle of a cornfield. Of course we had to wait for the farmer to cut down the corn before we did this.

I like old cemeteries and the history they represent. The older the dates, the better. This one has a historic informational plaque on it.

The oldest headstone that I found was from 1860.

I could never be a genealogist – too many of the same names for me. There are two different Polly’s here.

Not to mention, Elijah had a ‘Consort’? Her name was Esther.

And then I see this, which at first I laughed at (Who names their kid POT?) Hey, it looked like a kid sized marker to me! It appears to be another marker for Polly O?

Here is some info I found on the internet concerning this cemetery. Wicomico County list every cemetery within its border. 22 pages worth. A lot of them belong to families and businesses.

TOADVINE FAMILY GRAVEYARD

This cemetery is on the north side of Union Church Road about half-way in between its intersection with Jackson Road and that with Oakland School Road and about 200 yards away from the road in a field. It is nicely kept and in good shape and can be seen in Nutters District near the house of W.W. Toadvine on the 1877 maps. The transcription was provided by our friend Mike Hitch. Thanks, Mike!

Greenmount Cemetery

This Saturday, Kathy and I will be doing a walking tour of Greenmount Cemetery in Baltimore. I had previously done this tour about a year ago but it was very disorganized – by myself. I roamed around aimlessly, searching for famous people among the 9,000+ graves. This time we will be part of a tour given by historian Wayne Schaumberg. Some of the more notable headstones I hope to see are of Johns Hopkins, Enoch Pratt, John Garrett (B&O Railroad), Bodine (photographer), Booth (performer and assassin), Mayor Swann (Swann Lake which became Lake Roland in Robert E Lee park which is now Lake Roland Park) and Mayor Chapman (Lake Chapman, which is now Druid Lake) The Findagrave website lists all the graves.

Here are some sewerage notes and photos from the Sewage Commission:

1866 – We (Commission) constructed a wall on Greenmount Ave to Hoffman and extended the tunnel under Hoffman. Then made the necessary lateral sewer and inlet to carry off the surface water from the avenue (Greenmount). It is a great improvement for the Cemetery Company.

1887 – Monument to Hon. John Lee Chapman, ex-mayor – By Ordinance No. 105, approved October 10, 1887, the Mayor and City Commissioner were directed to have a monument constructed and erected in the lot where repose the remains of John Lee Chapman, one of the mayors of Baltimore; and to contract with the Greenmount Cemetery Company to keep the lot in good and proper order forever. Under this ordinance a contract has been made with Messrs. Bevan & Sons for the construction and erection of the monument at a cost of four hundred and seventy-five dollars, the plan presented by them having been approved. The contract will be made with the Cemetery Company in due time for keeping the lot in order.

1906 – Tablet to commemorate the beginning of sewer construction. On November 20th the Chief Engineer was authorized to design a suitable tablet to commemorate the beginning of sewer construction at the intersection of Ensor and Lanvale streets; the tablet to be placed in the face of the wall of Greenmount Cemetery, which is only a few feet from the point at which ground was broken for the work. The Chairman was requested to obtain permission from the Cemetery authorities to insert the tablet at the point named. The Chairman accordingly communicated with Mr. John A. Whitridge, President of the Greenmount Cemetery Company, and obtained permission from him to place the tablet as desired. A suitable tablet of bronze has been designed and will be placed in position as soon as completed.

Looking at the maps from back then, I was amazed at how close the Jones Falls is to the cemetery.

The Morgue

From the 1888 Health Commissioner: I may be permitted complacently to add, that there has not occurred more than five cases of small-pox in the City of Baltimore during the past five years (all imported), and not more than two deaths. This is due to vaccination, carefully and persistently practiced by the excellent corps of Vaccine Physicians, added to the watchfulness and diligence of our able Quarantine Physician. Too much cannot be said to the people on this subject, and all should be convinced of the absolutely protective power of perfectly successful vaccination against small-pox. Those who arrogantly set themselves up as anti-vaccinationists should be regarded in every community as public enemies, and treated accordingly. Notwithstanding the good results of our past years’ experience, there are many defects in the sanitary condition of our City, that it is our bounden duty to correct at the earliest possible period of time. Prominent among these is the improvement of our storm-water sewers, most of which are defective in every particular. Constructed in bad form of improper materials, with insufficient and irregular grades, and for the most part un-trapped. Hundreds of damp or wet cellars contribute to the causes of sickness and deaths, which could be prevented by a system of drains, if the system of sewers were such as to render it possible or practicable. I trust the City Council will not delay in this important work. The disposal of the offal of our large cities is a problem of great importance as well as most perplexing difficulty. Cremation has been urged and adopted in several places, but as yet has not proved entirely satisfactory, either from a sanitary or economic point of view. The subject is still undergoing experimental investigation at Buffalo, New York and Chicago, and we shall await the result before recommending any plan for the improvement of our present system of disposal of garbage, street dirt and night soil. I would be failing in my duty if I did not again appeal to your Honorable Body in behalf of those who have so often and so sorely felt the need of a Morgue. In the name of the afflicted friends of the unknown dead, in the name of our efficient and zealous police force, and in the name of every reflecting citizen of Baltimore, I urge that this long felt want shall no longer be neglected and laid aside as a matter for future consideration. A city of five hundred thousand people cannot afford to be without a Morgue any more than she can to be without electric lights.

Montebello 100 #2

Momentum is starting to build for this years 100th anniversary celebration. I just received a list of proposed events and speeches for this momentous occasion and we are meeting next week to discuss. This event is going to be so big that other yearly events are being cancelled to focus on this one, which is unfortunate because some of them are really nice. But one thing I don’t see on the list of events is – Ghost Walk Tours! Below is a photo of the property where the filtration plant is now located. What happened to all those graves??
